The Haley Family: I just wanted to send you my heartfelt sympathies for the loss of your mother, Alice. I haven't resided in Saint John for many years and with the passing of my own mother, Theresa MacNeil, I check the obituaries from time to time. I happened to come across Alice's today, July 12. I was speaking to Lee MacLean a while back and inquired about your Mom but she didn't know anything. My Mom has been gone a lot of years now but prior to her passing, she and Alice had become quite good friends. I remember my Mom telling me about when she pre-arranged her funeral at the Fundy (co-op) Funeral home in East Saint John and your Mom wanted to know why she would go way out there. Mom said because it was owned by the Co-op and for what she wanted, it was cheaper. Alice told her that she better not die in the winter then because she was not driving way out there for the visitation if there was snow on the roads. As it happened, Mom did pass away in the winter of 1998, and I'm not sure how she got there, but Alice did make it to the visitation. I imagine they're having a chuckle about it now. Your Mom was such a sweet lady and may all your memories of her be happy ones.

As most of you know I live in Vancouver and cannot be here for Alices Celebration of Life today so I thought I would say a few words about this special woman.Alice was like a 2nd mom to me growing up. Tara & I were so close I was at the Haley homestead all the time.I remember one summer day Tara & I were blasting Janis Joplin on the living room stereo while we were sitting on the front porch and mama Alice yelling from the kitchen ( she HAD to yell as the music was so loud ) " GOOD GRIEF GIRLS - WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO? THATS JUST AWFUL! So we changed it to Willie Nelson and she yells out " NOW THATS NICE GIRLS! ha ha haI remember the Haley Christmas trees with the icicles hung so perfectly, the time our family had a kitchen fire at Easter and Alice had me for dinner at their place that day. All the sleepovers when she would lovingly feed us snacks and check up on us - and all the times she let Sean & I use the car as teenagers AND SHE EVEN PAID FOR THE GAS!I especially loved the kitchen. Papa Eric reading at the table. the old Philco fridge and little Ellen baking neverending cupcakes. All the while Alice would be coming out to talk to me while Tara looked for her skates. That was such a warm kitchen and Alice always called me " dear ". I loved that. These few things are not a even a drop in the bucket of great memories I have of her growing up - but they are always the 1st ones I think of when I think of her.So to her family - I say to you all - Alice was a kind, happy, selfless wonderful woman and I feel blessed to have had her in my life.Goodnight " Dear " AliceLove Cathy

I will always remember your mother as both the strongest and kindest person that I knew growing up. I never saw her without a smile or a warm hug. Although she faced many challenges in life with the early loss of her husband and her children Shawn and Tara, she always showed the world that life could still go on in a positive way.
