Obituary of Lloyd Francis Downey
On February 1, 2021 Lloyd Francis Downey departed to be with his Lord and Saviour. Born in Saint John on November 11, 1930 to Carroll Estes Downey and Maloa (McCrea) Downey. Predeceased by his parents, his grandniece, Rachel McAfee, his sister-in-law, Eleanor (Dean) Downey, and his nephew, Wesley Downey. Survived by his siblings Gordon Downey, Barbara (Ralph) Maguire, Carol (William) Roach, his 5 nieces and 5 nephews, as well as many grand, and great-grand nieces and nephews. After his father died in 1960, Lloyd selflessly and uncomplainingly looked after his mother until her passing in 1994. A loving and loyal son for so many years. Lloyd attended vocational school where he learned the trade of electrician and worked as such for many years, his hard and honest work earning him many repeat customers. Uncle Lloyd as he was known to so many will be fondly remembered for his quiet, but essential presence at family and birthday dinners, his impish sense of humor, contagious giggle, and mischievous grin. He spent many years packing up his car with several nieces and nephews (and their friends) and driving to Bible Conferences in Montreal, Ottawa, New Jersey to name a few. His presence will be dearly missed at the Lorneville Meeting Room where he faithfully attended every meeting for years. His quiet but enduring love of his Lord and Saviour was known by all who knew him. Lloyd had a love of music and books and could often be found at the library in Lancaster Mall napping in a chair with a book in his hand. He was close to his family, meeting his sister Barbara every week for lunch at the Coffee Mill, and joining his sister Carol’s family every Sunday for dinner for many years. He had infinite patience for his nieces and nephews and would read them books for hours, and enjoyed getting and giving hugs to them all. Lloyd will be lovingly remembered until we meet again. “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” 1 Thessalonians 4:17. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John, N.B. (634 1701). A Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb 4, 2021 from 2 to 4 pm. Due to Covid- 19 Restrictions, Please wear a mask, and only 25 people max at one time. A private family Funeral Service will take place at Castle “Fallsview” Chapel on Friday Feb 5, 2021 at 11:00 am. The service will be live streamed for those unable to attend, a link to the live stream will be located on Lloyd’s obituary page. Interment will take place at Lorneville Cemetery in the spring of 2021. In Lieu of flowers, donations to the Lorneville Cemetery in Lloyd’s memory would be appreciated by the family.
