I only learned of David's passing in the last few days. We shared a house, in Fredericton, with some other students, while we both attended UNB in 1971. He was an ardent student and always displayed a positive attitude.
My heartfelt condolences to his wife Gloria and family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. MacGowan was my grade 12 Math teacher at MNHS in 1980. He had a wonderful sense of humor and patience for students not understanding the subject. We were only a small class, so we were able to get to know him on a personal level. He is definitely one of my favourite teachers.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Dave’s passing. The friendship that we shared spanned more than fifty years. The beginnings of that journey started in the world of municipal politics in the early 1970s when our respective parents also enjoyed an active friendship.
It is emotionally difficult to unpack fifty years of shared experience as educators and teachers working together at Millidgeville North High School and Saint John High School. Dave had transferred to SJHS a few years ahead of my arrival. I will never forget his phone call welcoming me to my new teaching assignment.
Dave and I retired together in June of 2006. The last day was filled with a shared emotional response realizing the significance of the event and how it would change our lives. Dave’s contribution as a teacher and educator was remarkable. His enthusiasm and love of mathematics helped inspire an entire generation of young people. The future for Dave and life after a successful thirty-three year teaching career held great promise. It’s gift of time was to be filled with new opportunities to explore and be creative. I am so sorry that it could not have been longer … .
Louise and I extend to Gloria, Blake, David and all of Dave’s extended family our heartfelt condolences.

He often gave me a drive from Millidgeville North high School and we used to have happy discussions about music.Everytime I heard mention of Reba McIntyre I thought of David. I do not think I got him interested in classical music. As I scrolled Facebook tonight, there, on the page, was the most beautiful smile, of my Grade 11 Math teacher, @ MNHS, Mr. MacGowan. His love of teaching & enthusiasm in the classroom, especially teaching algebra, (my favorite), was infectious. I still remember to this day how much fun his class was & how easy it was to learn math from him. MNHS was a great high school, with it's great legacy of the teaching staff, especially it's Math teachers. We will all miss you Mr. MacGowan. Rest in Peace. My sincere condolences to the MacGowan family.
I had Mr. MacGowan for grade 12 math at MNHS and struggled with some of the concepts but he never gave up helping me to “get it”. I still vividly remember meeting him in the hallway on that day in late June when getting our final marks, his smile was as wide as it could be as he approached me to tell me how happy he was with my final exam mark and that I had “gotten it”. The dedication to your students was second to none!

I first met Dave at Millidgeville North High School in the early ‘80s, and although I did not teach Math, Dave’s passion for the subject made me question my teaching path on more than one occasion! Dave was never one to miss a staff party, where his knowledge of music and sports was especially evident! When we reunited as part of the staff of SJHS, Dave’s smile and infectious laughter made my job feel so much easier. His’ cup was half full’, but he was never, never naïve. Dave had a keen eye for all that needed changing in education. His contributions to education, to students, and to school life are immeasurable.
Our teaching family has lost one of its brightest stars, and I, for one, will never forget all that David MacGowan contributed in the classroom, and without. I will miss you, Dave. My deepest condolences to Gloria, the boys, and all of your family.

They say Uncle David and I look alike. From the picture I attached, I think it is apparent that we do. I have to say I am not a religious man but lately I have come to appreciate a symmetry to the universe that I cannot really explain other than spiritually. Not only do David and I look alike, but we seemed to run a similar life path. I followed in his shadow with his love of football and adopted touch football as the passion of my early adult years. Uncle David and I even competed against each other and I was awarded a trophy (by David) entitled; Trojan Basher.
We also have a similar bent toward our profession - I was not motivated to climb the corporate ladder but simply wanted to add value where I could. Uncle David, wanted to make a difference in those he taught - and - he did! All the way out in Ft McMurray Alberta, I repeatedly met those who were his students and named him - The Best Teacher they ever had. Truly inspirational!
Even as we grew older, we seemed to carve similar paths. Although I was not a tennis player, just like David, I adopted a racquet sport (squash) as my second athletic passion. We discussed the beauty of these solo sports and compared them continuously to football; Team sports vs individual competition.
I have to say, Uncle David and I are were true dopple-gangers (in more than just appearance) and I feel so honored that I walked in his footsteps and to have had him in my life!
I love ya Uncle David!
