I knew "Smiley" from attending Saint Mary's Univ. back in the early seventies. He lived down the hall from me in High Rise 2. In that short period of time, I had many a laugh with him and enjoyed his company. I knew that he loved Europe and I was not surprised when I found out he had moved there. I am sorry that I never got to see him again since that time, but I have plenty of memories. RIP and keep smiling!!

Soft spoken and outspoken, Davy was a gentleman. He was also a rock’n’roll wild man. When he arrived at a Boss Blues gig that was when the dancing began. He would bring a Rolling Stones T-shirt in case we played “Honky Tonk Women”, and always asked for a set-list after the show. Good times.

May you all look back on the precious memories and find peace in knowing that David was much loved by us. He had a wonderful sense of humour and always brought the best out of anyone he met. He was an amazing person and were privileged to be part of his life.
Farewell our old ‘herring choker’ friend – gone but certainly not forgotten.
With our most sincere condolences

Our mum and dad were very good friends of David's here in Basel, so my brother and I remember David from as far back as when we were small children. Wearing his cool get-up and with a cap emblazoned with his beloved Quo, he would be laughing, smiling and always, always dancing when the music was live and loud. Grizzly, a true soul of rock and roll and who is deeply missed here in Basel. Sincere condolences to Laila, Ruth and all the family. Sam & Tim. xxx

I knew David for quite a few years, but I never knew him to be downhearted. He was always ready to share a joke and lend a hand where needed. He was always able to see the bright side and to encourage others to be cheerful. He is sadly missed by all who knew him.

Many happy and fond memories flood my mind of growing up with David (aka Smiley) and his wonder sisters and brothers on Whipple St. We all spent many happy hours playing ball, skating, building snow forts, going to the local beaches and celebrating someone's Birthday together.
I would gladly go back in time and willingly do it all again.
My condolences to David's family and friends. I am currently undergoing cancer treatments and am unable to attend services.
Rest in peace my friend keep on smiling until we can meet again.

Grizzly was a character who was memorable. Always with a smile on his face and a beer in his hand and a twinkle in his toes. His passion and zest for life was infectious. His love of music and dancing was brilliant. We had many a great time with him at Z7 in Basel and a range of other places in town. He certainly lived up to that famous phrase “dance like no one is watching”. Well he didn’t care if you did ! RIP Grizzly and deepest wishes to the family. Cas and Bruce.

I send my condolences to all those who are family of David and everyone who loved him for the great guy he truly was. I understand how you must all feel. The shock of him passing is so painful
After about forty years of having a friend you meet for quality time in a bar, at a concert. Or just on the street saying words like , see you later. You get used to knowing they are there at some point to confide in or just share jokes with. Of all the friends I have known in my life and I am 73 years old. I have never missed anyone as much as I miss David. And I say that from the bottom of my heart R.I.P. dear friend. see you later Dominic
