My condolences to your family on the passing of your dear Dad and Granddad. I met Vern as his Letter Carrier when he was living in his apartment. He was a lovely man who had a great outlook on life.He told me how fiercely the Canadians fought at Nijmegen, The Netherlands. They held the bridge that spanned the river Waal for four days against the German army. There is a famous movie entitled " The Bridge Too Far" based on the historical events that your Dad took part in.Your Dad is a true War Hero and certainly helped in the effort that saved many lives - something I thanked him for. (My husbands parents and their families were all living in the surrounding villages during the War.) I thought of your Dad when I visited there two years ago.

I met Vernon many years ago at the Lancaster Mall. He and his friend Harry would come into Zellers everyday and go to the restaurant for coffee. They would walk around and talk to the staff. He would tease me because I lived out in quispamsis. He would ask how the weather was out there and I would say it was always nicer then the weather in Saint John. He told me many of his war stories and how if I wasnt good I would end up in the housecow. I continued to see him over the years once the walmart opened. I was saddened to hear of his passing, he will be missed.

To Vernon's Family, I am very sorry to hear of his passing. We lived next door to Vernon on Beaconsfield Avenue for 15 years, talked to him most everyday in the yard or bumped into himat the mall. My daughter and I always loved to hear his stories and share some laughs. I could not believe how much energy he had, a truly nice man, always a pleasure too see.Peter and Rachel Kierstead

I would often see Vernon at the Irving Nature Park as I was going for a run. He was always there early in the morning before the park opened and he always asked how my mother and father were doing. He would tell me how much he enjoyed walking at the park. At the time, he was going over there everyday to walk around the park.

I first met Vern (Mr. Dempsey) when I was a child living on Chesley Street. When I joined the Navy at HMCS BRUNSWICKER, Vern was working at Barrack Green Armouries in the late 70’s early 80’s, he always stopped to chat and made sure he said hello each time we met. In more recent years he continued to stop and chat when we met at Lancaster mall always asking…”How’s you Mother and how’s your Brother?” Your Dad was a great guy, we all all richer for having him in our lives. May you take comfort knowing we share in your loss and strength from our prayers.Sincerely,Paul D SmithCPO (ret)

Vernon and I became very good friends during his stay at Ridgewood Veterans Wing. He often came to visit me in my office, to talk and joke around, and we would go for daily walks, sometimes two, around the site. Vernon enjoyed the outdoors very much, and he would stop at every tree or bush, and tell me what each one was. Often he would pick me a rose from the rose bush as we passed it on each of our walks, and we would sit in the lawn chairs by the water and have great talks. He talked about his children, his parents, his grandchildren, and how he met his wife, Vivian. He told me many stories about his life. One of my favourites being the watermelon in the backpack. Vernon and I had hot chocolate every day, and sat and chatted with the staff in the cafeteria or outside at the front entrance. Vernon and I partnered at bingo, and some of the activities he enjoyed with us were bingo, bowling, cooking, bus trips, and lunch trips out. Vernon was very social, and enjoyed talking with the staff and the many residents at Ridgewood Veterans Wing. He quickly became one of my favourite veterans, and I will cherish the friendship we shared.
