Aunt Mimi was one if thr excellent teachers I had at Barnhill as well. Aside from that, mshe was always willing to listen and provide advice when asked. She was a classy lady who we all loved and respected. Very sad I can't join my family in person tomorrow as we celebrate her life, but my thoughts are with all of you, especially with Linda, who looked after Aunt Mimi so caringly in her later years.

In September of 1946 I was introduced to "Miss Stackhouse" on my first day at South Bay school. I was five and excited to be going to school. She was 19, and this was her first teaching assignment. I was captivated and when she left South Bay the next year, at the end of grade two, my world came to an end. I cannot recount the many "firsts" I experienced under her guidance, but she was certainly responsible for instilling my life-long love of books with her gift of The House at Pooh Corner at the end of grade one. Life moved on, but I often thought of her. In January of 1965, while visiting my parents after two years abroad, I worked briefly in the office at Barnhill Memorial. On my first day, the principal asked me to take a grade four class as their teacher had had an accident over the holidays. It was Muriel's class and it was clear to me that these children felt about her as I had. During my term at Barnhill, we shared many lunch hours and knowing her as an adult was as delightful as I remembered. I left Saint John at the end of the school year and very much regret that we did not keep in touch. I am especially sorry that I did not know she was in Ottawa. Please know that my thoughts are with her family today.

I am a senior now but remember this elementary school teacher at Barnhill school with great fondness. She always was my favourite teacher Miss Stackhouse and very kind. When I got 99and one half on a test she explained that I had spelled constellation wrong and so lost a half point.I can still see her smile now. I believe that she had red hair.-David Olive

Dear Linda and JohnI was surprised to see Mimi's notice today - I thought she was going to be with us forever! Few ladies showed the spunk and determination and stamina that Mimi did. She was so very fortunate to have you two show her so much love and caring - being present to her so frequently and championing her needs. My condolences to you. Mimi's passing will leave quite a void in your lives. Take care of yourselves. Mimi is in a great place now!

Muriel was my teacher in grades 2, 3 and 4 at Ketepec School. I have many fond memories of being in her class. She never raised her voice, but we knew not to push our luck! She was an excellent teacher and a wonderful woman. My sincere condolences to her family.

My sincerest condolences to John & Linda and to all the members of Muriel's family. Muriel was my grade 5 school teacher at Barnhill Memorial School. She was a leader and the most kind hearted soul. Those who knew her could only have benefitted by her knowledge and her interest in imparting that knowledge. She will be dearly missed. Ann

Dear Linda, I was saddened to hear of Muriel's passing. It has been approximately 50 years since I last saw either of you but you have often been in my thoughts. Occasionally I would think of trying to contact Muriel to let her know how much I appreciated the positive influence she had on me as a young child. You were my best friend in elementary school and I remember being called sparrow in your home because I would appear without announcement. There are many memories of kittens in the back porch, countless hours playing Barbies, Sorry and our made up version of Man From U.N.C.L.E. But what has made the most lasting impact on my life was being taken with you to church after Muriel served us a breakfast of cream of wheat with brown sugar.I would love to hear about your life. If you like you can reach me at paulalynnbrown777@gmail.comI am unable to attend the funeral but will be thinking of you and praying for peace and comfort at this sad time. Paula Brown (VanBuskirk)
