Obituary of Carol Jean McMullin (Rogers)

McMullin (Rogers), Carol Jean, B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed. It is with great sadness that Matthew and Nicholas announce the sudden and unexpected passing of their mother Carol Jean McMullin ("Big") on Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on October 26, 1954 in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Eldon T. and Edna Jean (Atkinson) Rogers. Carol was an educator at Fundy High School for 32 years having been schooled at New Albert, Saint John High School, Saint Mary's University and the University of New Brunswick. She was an outstanding teacher of English and Drama. Later in her career, she became a Guidance Counselor, and ultimately the Department Head of Student Services. She organized numerous events including the Oratorical Competition and Baccalaureate  Service. Carol founded the Royal Order of Mariners which celebrated commitment and outstanding teaching ability at Fundy High School. Carol often remarked that seeing a child succeed was one of life’s greatest gifts. Many a Charlotte County student was blessed to have her as their educator, and, more importantly, have nothing but fond memories of their encounters. Her focus in life was family and friends. “Love and cherish” was her banner. Having lost her mother early in life, Carol’s devotion to her father and siblings was simply unparalled. Carol had the ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in the world at that moment in time. The dream spots were Lake utopia, the Saint John River, both of which she swam, and her kitchens. The Pennfield residence was an open door and, besides family events, was the scene of many floor hockey games and Sunday night TV bingo. The Black’s Harbour Rink and field of Charlotte County were her stomping grounds. Carol was an avid swimmer and won numerous awards as a youth, including Student of the Year. Carol is survived by her sons, Matthew and Nicholas (Kendra), her brothers David (Kelly), Mark (Family), Keith (Cindy), her sister Kathy, Aunt Evelyn (“The Admiral”) Speight, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special mention has to be made of Uncle Paul (Pauly), Aunt Toddie, Harold and Wendy, as well her courageous brother-in-law Roger Gallant and cousin Mary Jane Anderson. Going before her were her brother Eldie, her sisters Linda and Julia, her nephew Silas and nieces Mary Alanna and Jennifer. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, Fallsview Chapel, 309 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John West (634-1701), visitation will take place on Thursday, March 7th from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, March 8th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 12:00 p.m. from Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Interment will be held at a later date. There will be a reception following the Service at the Assumption Center. Donations, in memory of Carol, may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.
