Obituary of Eugénie Marie-Anne Babineau
Surrounded by family, Eugénie Marie-Anne Babineau passed away peacefully on October 16, 2022, at Bobby’s Hospice. Born in Saint-Ignace, NB she was the daughter of Joseph W and Madeleine (nee Gallant) Richard.
Eugénie and Alfred moved from the small community of St. Ignace, NB in the fall of 1963 to the West Side of Saint John where they created a loving home for their family. They immediately set out becoming productive members of the West Saint John community by being faithful parishioners of The Our Lady of Assumption Parish. In addition to serving as a Eucharistic minister, Eugénie was also a member of the choir and involved in the RCIA program. Eugénie and Alfred would also distribute the Eucharist to sick patients at the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Eugénie was known as being an individual who would always step up and help. She would volunteer her time at the Assumption Center serving at the Knights of Columbus breakfast, greeting people with a smile and a kind word. Many knew Eugénie as an expert sandwich maker!!!
As a humble person Eugénie would never speak of her involvement in founding, and becoming, the First President of the Knights of Columbus Council 6770 Ladies Auxiliary. The “Ladies of the Knights” as they were called, tongue in cheek, performed countless hours of community service.
After arriving in Saint John her first place of employment was the House of Hay in the Lancaster Plaza. The remainder of her working life was spent caring for others at the DVA Hospital, and then the Saint John Regional Hospital, as Dietary Staff until her retirement in 1996.
Eugénie’s lifelong mission in service of others was no more evident than with her loving commitment to her family. She was her happiest when in the company of her husband Alfred, her children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Eugénie was at peace and very comfortable in her final days thanks to the tender and loving care of her special friends at Bobby’s Hospice. The entire Babineau family are thankful for having such wonderful professionals, and the Bobby’s Hospice facility, in our community caring for our loved ones.
Eugénie will be dearly missed by her loving husband Alfred of 65 years; children Aldoria (Catherine), Murielle (Jim), Francine (David), and Jeanine (David); grandchildren Denise (Knoll), Michelle (Geoff), David (Katelyn), Sarah (Jonathan), Émilie (Andrew), Kathleen, Curtis (Ashley), Lukas (Nicole), and Ryan (Samantha); 12 great-grandchildren Kaleb, Ainsley, Andrew, Jacob, Brooklyn, Sophia, Lyla, Aria, Olive, Iris, Sophie, and Maxwell; brothers François (Dina), Laurie (Adélia), Émerie (Marie-Anne), and Paul-Émile (Gisèle); sisters Rose-Mai (late Yvon) and Yolande (late Elmo); as well as many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents; brothers Irénée (late Marguerite), Camille (late Lucie), Wilfred (Marie), Edmond (late Jeanne), Gérard (late Maria), and Yvon (Roberta); sisters Aurélie (late Gérald), Bertha (late Johnny), Flora (late Ulysse), Alexina (late Émile); sister Émilie in her childhood; and infant sisters Zélia and Gemma.
Resting at Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB (634-1701), visitation for Eugénie will be Wednesday, October 19, 2022, from 2:00 – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2022, for 12:00 PM at the Our Lady of the Assumption Church (360 Dufferin Row) with interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations in Eugénie’s memory can be made to Bobby’s Hospice, Our Lady of the Assumption Church, or charity of your choice. For those who wish, condolences may be made by visiting www.castlefh.ca
