Obituary of Ann Green
The family of Kathleen "Ann" Green is sad to announce her passing on March 10, 2023. Born in Saint John, NB, on June 26, 1939, Ann was a daughter of the late Roy and Dorothea (nee Whalen) Anderson.
Ann spent her childhood in Dorchester with her beloved Whalen Grandparents and on the westside of Saint John. She met her husband "Bobby", of 63 years, when they were still children. They had many happy adventures together, exploring the westside with their band of friends. In the winter they skated at Beaconsfeild rink, and in the summer swimming at Bayshore Beach.
Ann and Bob married three days after Bob's 21st birthday as they had to wait for his birthday to qualify for the Miliary Married Allowance. Over the next twenty years Bob took up posts at military bases on both sides of the country. Always economy minded, the family - including their 3 children and pets - took to the open road and made the journey by car; travelling across Canada numerous times. Through their travels Ann made many close friends, many of whom she kept in contact with over the years. She enjoyed the chance to see and visit many parts of Canada. She saw each transfer as an exciting new beginning.
Ann worked outside the home when circumstances allowed. Most of her jobs were related to the phone industry. She was a telephone operator at NBTel in the late 1950's. She would also work as the SMT Bus station switchboard operator, where her employer allowed her to read a novel during slow times. Later she would work for an answering service on Union Street in Saint John. She was a veracious reader before her illness. She liked a good "scary" book in her younger years. Stephen King books where always favoured, but in later years it was a good murder mystery that was appreciated.
Ann had a soft spot of all animals, especially the feline variety. She gave amazing care to many over the years including Mama Puss, Spot, Winston and lastly Nitro. In her last years she became the cat whisperer of Greendale, where many neighbourhood cats dropped by regularly for treats and Ann always obliged.
She loved a gathering with her friends and family. For many years one of her favourite pastimes was to meet with her beloved Aunties along with her sister, cousin, and best friend. They spent raucous afternoon playing cards, having drinks, and telling stories of bygone days. Ann was irreverently funny. She had a sharp wit and many times turned that to herself. Nothing could make her laugh harder than when she was laughing at her own folly.
She was the heart of her family and family was her heart. She took great care of Bobby and of her children and loved them fiercely. Later, when her grandchildren came along that care was equally extended to them. Ann was a very loyal person. If she was in your corner, you were indeed fortunate as she was there for the long haul.
Ann will be missed deeply by her husband Robert of 63 years; children: Lorne, Kelly Lee (Luc Thereault), and Russell; grandchildren: Keesha, Tiffany, Brandon, Mike, and Sam; 5 great-grandchildren; brother John (Barbara); as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and sister Mary-Lee Johnston.
Ann's family want to say a special thank you to the staff of Rocmaura, especially those who work in Trinity Court, for their wonderful care and kindness they showed Ann during her last years. It meant so much to us.
