Obituary of Joseph John Landry
It is with great sadness, but appreciation for a life well-lived, that the family of Joseph John Landry wish to announce his passing on April 6, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Chatham, NB, on November 29, 1939, he was the son of the late Joseph and Viola (Hebert) Landry.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ethel Landry (nee Taylor); daughter Denise (Bill) McGill of Saint John; son Michael (Pam) Landry of Portland, Maine; grandsons Ian McGill of Saint John, Zach, Josh and Nolan Landry of Portland Maine; step-grandsons Alexander and Christopher Tevanian of Portland, Maine; sister Jean Comeau (Rick) of Nova Scotia; brother David Landry (Betty) of Miramichi; sisters and brothers in- law: Doris and Leo Roach, Phyllis Taylor, Marion and Morris Spicer, Betty Kenny, Keith and Angela Taylor, Lee Taylor, Evelyn Taylor all of Moncton, Ruth Roberts of Edmonton, Alberta, Joe and Diana Taylor of Etobicoke, Ontario, and Kevin and Cathy Taylor, Quispamsis; as well as many niece, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by infant son Joseph, infant grandson William McGill, sisters Joan Newton and Dorothy Voutour Murphy, brothers William, Carl, and Ron Landry; parents-in-law Ron and Ruby Taylor; brothers- in-law: Harry Taylor, Doug Roberts, Charlie Kenny, Ron Newton, Ted Voutour and Jack Murphy; and sisters- in-law Donna Landry and Sylvia Taylor.
Joe grew up in Chatham, becoming a “Hiller” when the family moved to the other side of town. He proudly told the story that as the new boy he had to participate in a rock fight with the neighbourhood boys, including his future brother-in-law. Joe attended St. Michael’s School until the 8th grade when he left to help support his family by working in the woods with his father and grandfather.
When he was older, he began delivering groceries for W.S. Loggie & Co. It was at this time that he met the love of his life, Ethel. They married on September 1, 1962, and settled in Chatham with their dog, Shep, named after the dog in the Elvis Presley song.
Like so many Maritimers, Joe and Ethel moved to Toronto. It was here that Joe took a course in meat-cutting and began his career, including working in a shop where the customers included the Canadian comedy duo, Wayne & Shuster.
Shortly after the arrival of their daughter they moved to Moncton, NB, where Joe began working for Dominion Stores. Their son arrived a few years later. Joe joined the local judo club, participating in tournaments and earning his black belt. In the mid 70’s the family returned to Chatham where Joe eventually became Meat Manager with Dominion at the new Northumberland Square Mall.
Joe was a true “family man.” Holidays, vacations, and weekends revolved around family activities: camping, boating, snowmobiling, skating, biking, card games, and family dinners. Christmas was Joe’s favourite holiday. Decorating the house, visiting family members, attending Christmas parties were all enjoyed by Joe. The traditional Christmas Eve candlelight supper followed by mass and then the annual get together and children’s show at his sister’s was the highlight of the season.
Later Joe and Ethel moved back to Moncton and then finally settled in Saint John. Joe moved to Carleton Kirk Lodge in January of 2021.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus (3rd and 4th degree) 1219 Council and 8094 Council. He and Ethel were volunteers at the Sunday morning breakfasts sponsored by Council 8094. He was a regular blood donor, having donated over 50 pints to the former Red Cross.
A quiet man, he enjoyed reading the daily newspaper, westerns, and mysteries. He was a wrestling fan since the time of Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling to the WWE. His favourite sport was hockey and was a lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens. His love of music began with Elvis Presley. He was a fan of country music, having attended many concerts over the years, but his favourite was Johnny Cash.
He will be missed beyond measure.
The family would like to thank the staff at Carleton Kirk Lodge for the care they received over the past two years. Also, the care and compassion provided by the staff of 4B South, B North, and Dr. Attabib during Joe’s stay at the Saint John Regional Hospital is appreciated.
Resting at Castle Funeral Home (506) 634-1701 (309 Lancaster Ave., Saint John), a Funeral Liturgy for Joe will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the Castle Funeral Home Chapel for 12:00 PM. Interment will directly follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice.
