Obituary of Karen Ann Goodwin
It is with broken hearts that the family of Karen (Mawhinney/Cassidy) Goodwin must announce her sudden passing on June 8, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Karen was born December 2, 1945, in Saint John, N.B.
Karen (Mom, Mimi, Mimi K, Uncle Mimi) is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Lloyd, her daughters Linda (Kent MacDonald) Cassidy of Ottawa, Andrea Cassidy of Saint John, Casey (Joe) Ferguson of Waterville-Sunbury, and Paula (Rodney) Meehan of Beaumont, as well as her two stepdaughters Paula (Kevin) Wilson and Maureen Goodwin both of Grand Manan.
Karen or more fondly remembered as Mimi will be deeply missed by her grand-children Carly, Ashley, Cassidy, Heather, Ryan, Jennifer, Angela,Taneshia, Nic and Ryan as well as her great grand-children Eli, Charlie, Sebastian, Evelynn, Kaedyn, Deakon, Madison, Kamdyn, Jacelyn, Tyson, Jordon, Ryan, Isabelle and Jaimee who will forever be her pride and joy.
Karen was also survived by her brothers, Michael (Donna) Mawhinney, Jarvis (Becky) Mawhinney and Ken (Diane)Mawhinney, numerous sister and Brother in laws as well as her nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her loving mother and father, Paul and Irene (Cass) Mawhinney and her first love and husband of 23 years Allen R Cassidy.
Karen had three loves in her life. Her husband Lloyd with whom she built an amazing life filled with love, trust and companionship. Creating a solid foundation that will endure. Her daughters, their children and grandchildren, Karen’s legacy will forever live on through her daughters and their families who carry Karens zest for living, loving and traveling. And finally, her sense of community where she was always ready with a helping hand, a smile on her face or a kind word of encouragement. She will be missed for her joy and kindness, forever remembered by all she touched.
From her daughters- Mom, you showed us how to be courageous and optimistic no matter how deep the heart break. Showing us how to be gracious, yet tenacious, kind and forgiving and always wanting us to follow our hearts and dreams even when you didn’t agree with them. “Solidarity Mom”.
Passing on your love of family, travel and of course shopping, your legacy will endure.
Karen had many jobs that she was proud of but her biggest accomplishment that she left in a note to us was getting her GED at 41 without studying. Overcoming a learning disability and building a life based on her learning methods and passions, Karen found her way into tourism and continued long after her retirement educating the “cruisers” on Saint John.
Everything aside, nothing could hold a candle to the pride and love Karen had for her family. While our hearts maybe broken over her loss, we find comfort in her favourite quote “It’s in your hands God”.
The arrangements are under the care of Castle Funeral home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John. Visitation will be on June 15th at Castle Funeral Home, from 2-4 and 6-8. A celebration of life will take place on Friday June 16th at 11:00am at Lancaster Baptist Church. The interment will take place immediately following at the Maces Bay Cemetary.
Karen would have liked donations to be made to Romaro House, Lancaster Baptist Church or a charity of choice. The service will be live - streamed on the Lancaster Baptist Church You Tube Channel. https://www.youtube.com/@LBCSaintJohn/videos
