Obituary of Mary Edith Melanson
It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Mary Edith Melanson (nee Carvell) announce her passing at Bobby’s Hospice on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 following a long battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband Paul, daughters Krista and Andrea; and the person who gave her the most joy, her grandson Lucas. She is also survived by her “soul sister” Ann Lester. Mary was an only child; she considered the Melansons, and of course, Ann, to be the brothers and sisters she never had.
Predeceased by her parents Evelyn (nee Pike) and John “Jack” Carvell, along with several aunts and uncles, her in-laws, Albert and Roselyn (nee Vautour) Melanson, brother and sister in-law Michael and Gail Melanson, brother in-law Eddie Sheppard, nephew Bruce Melanson and niece Leah Theall (nee Melanson).
Mary was a long-time employee of the City of Saint John (36 years). She loved the work she did there and always had many stories. Her retirement in 2003 was a very difficult decision for her.
She had a true zest for life, she loved to travel and was always looking for fun in the next adventure. She loved to dance and was a member of the Crazy Soles Line Dance Group. Her love for all things Elvis was unwavering and she even managed to drag Paul to Graceland.
Mary and Paul spent many years at their cottage and wintering in Florida making memories, in their “little piece of heaven”, enjoying old friends and making new. Their “Florida group” became close and continued to stay in touch.
She was a loving and kind and volunteered extensively with her church, Carleton Kirk United Church, and within her community.
Mary’s life was blessed and full. However, any time spent with her grandson Lucas was her most favourite time of all.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff of Extra-mural, Bobby’s Hospice and the support of Drs. Christian Mackin and Lisa Turner.
