My sister and I are the luckiest people to have a “Mémére” like her. Pépére loved to make her laugh. I’ve always said that their love is the best love story I’ve ever known. Her zest for life was inspiring and she thought us unconditional love. Pure love.
I’m going to miss her laugh and her saying “oh my God”. She had the best sense of humour, and her vulnerability was adorable. Like when we told her that ice cream isn’t good for her diabetes, she said, “ice cream isn’t fattening?!” We all burst out laughing. She thought me to eat my Humpty Dumpty cheese sticks with a fork, so that your fingers don't get all orange. I loved her accent. She had her own vocabulary.
I miss our Christmases together. I miss her carrots salad and carrot cake. I miss waking up to the smell of bacon and seeing her cook our breakfast. I loved watching her in her rocking chair drinking tea and watching her soaps. I remember talking about Another World like it was "real”, and we were so passionate about it. It was so relaxing.
She was a very passionate person. She loved dancing and singing. She was compassionate and had a lot of empathy which made her an excellent caregiver. She would let us go through her makeup and curlers. We would dress up and act like little old ladies. She loved entertaining. They played cards almost every night when they lived in the West side. I talk to my plants because of her.
Sadly, we lost my Dad, her son Ernest when he was only 64 to cancer. It was awful and I know that it ripped a part of her. It was very difficult. But her resilience was stupendous. Both of her parents passed when they were 90 and she said that if she can reach that, she would be happy.
I will never get used to talk about Mémére in the past tense. I can't believe that I will never hear her voice again!
I could go on and on with stories, but I will conclude by saying "Merci ma petite Mémére d'amour. Bon repos et je t'aime beaucoup."
