Obituary of Mary Lorraine Butler

With heavy hearts, the family of Mary Lorraine Butler announces her passing on March 4, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB, on December 3, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Ethel (nee Barton) McDonald.

Growing up in Fairville, she lived and worked on the West Side for many years; she loved the reminisce about growing up in Fairville. Mary moved to Toronto where she worked for Admiral TV, and then to Montreal, before coming back to Saint John. Gaining employment with Maritime Paper, she then met the love of her life Ronald “Peter” Butler. Together they had three children and built a life together in the Saint John West community.

Devoting her life to her family, Mary loved her children and grandchildren deeply. Mary was a strong woman who persevered through all life’s challenges with grace. A woman with a big heart, she was a mother and grandmother figure to many of the children in the Musquash community. She would take the time to sit out on the deck to talk and share stories, bake cookies for the neighbourhood, and welcomed the kids to use her backyard to play. Mary also had a love for animals, calling herself grandma to Belle the family dog.

Mary is survived by her two children Betty O’Connor (Ken Kierstead) and Joe Butler (Lisa Knight) both of Musquash; grandsons Christopher O’Connor (Jessica Tippett) of Norton, NB and Conner LeBlanc of Nova Scotia; sisters Doris Evans of Saint John, and Betty Tessier of Hamilton, Ontario; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents Mary was predeceased by her husband R. Peter Butler; son Micheal Butler; brothers: Lloyd, Geroge, and David McDonald; and sisters Audrey Hanlon and Getrude Fowler.

The Butler family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Mackin, Dr. Doyle, and all the staff on the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their care and compassion.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Castle “Fallsview” Funeral Home (506) 634-1701 309 Lancaster Ave., Saint John NB. Visitation for Mary will be on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 2:00 – 7:00 PM. A graveside service will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery on Monday, March 11, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
