Obituary of Patrick Fearon Currie

With a great deal of sadness, the family of Fearon Currie of Saint John, NB announce his passing which occurred October 24, 2023, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was 79 years old. Fearon was born in Atholville, NB on September 12, 1944, to Patrick Currie and Priscilla Currie (nee Fearon) who both pre-deceased him. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Currie (nee Price), his sister Patricia Duffield (Brett Harrison) of Tide Head NB, and his brother Van (Joan Woods) of Campbellton NB.

Fearon also leaves his three sons whom he was so proud of, Patrick (Stacey Sproule), Michael (Janet Morrison) and Kevan (Sherry Nolan); his 8 beautiful and loving grandchildren: Kelsey, Casey, MacKenzie, Patrick, Gabriel, Tristan, Katelyn, and Amelia; and one great grandchild, Haley.

Fearon graduated from Atholville High School in 1962 and completed his education at Teacher’s College and at Saint Thomas university. He began his working life as an apprentice Steamfitter/Pipefitter at Fraser Pulp Mill in Atholville and achieved Journeyman certification. He left that employment to begin a teaching position as a Physical Education Teacher at Hartland High School. Fearon then moved to an Extension Officer’s position with the New Brunswick Community College and was employed at the College in Woodstock, then Saint Andrews College and finally at the College in Saint John. He retired at the age of 57 from the Department of Advanced Education and Labour as a Regional Manager.

After retiring from the Provincial Government, Fearon formed an Educational Consulting Co. and contracted with CIDA and the World Bank to provide Post-Secondary Educational workshops to Colleges and Universities in Jordan, Romania, and Yemen. 

At the age of 30, Fearon began an avocation by joining the Canadian Armed Forces as an officer with the 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, (The Loyal Company). After succeeding through the various officer courses, combined with the requisite field training exercises, he was named the Commanding Officer of the Regiment in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He led the Regiment to many successful years as the CO. He attended the Militia Command and Staff Course in Kingston, ON, was promoted to full Colonel and took command of the New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Military District from where he retired some two years later.

In his younger years, Fearon played most sports, but enjoyed the playing baseball and hockey at competitive levels in the province. He played with a number of teams that competed at the Senior level in baseball and intermediate level in hockey, playing until in his 40’s. He and Nancy enjoyed watching and hardly missed hockey games played by their 3 sons, travelling around the province to watch the games. To the end, Fearon hardly missed watching the Yankees in the summer, and the Bruins in the winter.

Fearon often told Nancy that life with him was an adventure, and so it was. It is not the destination but the journey!

Visitation for Fearon will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Our Lady of the Assumption Parish (360 Dufferin Row, Saint John NB) at 12:00 pm on Monday, October 30, 2023. Following the Mass there will be a reception held at the Barrack Green Armories (60 Broadview Ave, Saint John, NB); all are welcome.
